Pompeii Casts. Victim 80 found outside Porta Capua / Tower IX in 2002.

Victim 80 is an adult male of over 20 years old, probably 20 to 25 years old.
The body was found outside the northern wall at tower IX in 2002.
The victim was found a few metres from another body (Victim 81) and a similar partial cast was obtained from this.
Two iron rings were fixed to the victim's ankles, probably shackles (compedes), which suggested his identification with a slave; a bronze armlet was on his left forearm.

The two iron rings are referred to in this catalogue, and here on the Palaestra exhibition card, as being found on victim 80, whereas they are usually displayed on victim 81, but are not mentioned in the catalogue for that victim.

Victim 80 right, and victim 81, left, before the cast was finalised.
The casting method used here differed from that of Fiorelli. The upper part of the cavity was excavated exposing the skeleton before the plaster was cast, giving a partial cast of the body resting on the soil beneath but not the upper part.
The cast is also poorly defined, particularly at the face and left foot, illegible.
